James D. Strickland, Jr., better known as Jamie, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2026, surrounded by the women he loved: Sydney, Tracie, Maggie, Debbie, Savannah, and his best friend, Roman, after a valiant battle with ALS. He was born on April 26, 1967, to James Dewey Strickland, Sr., and Betty Tindel Strickland. He had roots in Altha and Bristol and never met a stranger because of his robust and gregarious personality. He had the most beautiful green eyes and a smile that would melt your heart! He was a five-star father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He had a rare gift for making everyone feel special. You could not help but love him.
He worked for the Florida Department of Corrections for many years, but his true calling was the scrap metal business, which he learned from his father-in-law, Harry Cumbaa. He worked for Harry for many years before moving to Atlanta, GA, to further advance his career. After working in Atlanta for a few years, he decided to move back to Altha to start his own recycling business, J & S Recycling Solutions. He worked until the ALS made it too difficult. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and taking his big boat out to sea, but his greatest delight was being a father to Sydney. From the second she was born until his last breath, Sydney was his pride and joy. Jamie was there for all the major milestones and all the little things in between. They shared an unbreakable bond that could not be shattered.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Albert and Leetie Tindel; Dewey and Myrtice Strickland; his parents, James (Doogie) Strickland and Betty Tindel; his uncles, Billy Tindel, Kenny Strickland, and Allen Strickland; his aunts, Marian Strickland and Carol Strickland; his cousin, Kent Strickland; his mother-in-law, Sybil Cumbaa; and his favorite brother-in-law, Ken Shelton.
His absence will be felt by many: his daughter, Sydney Strickland Roney, and her husband Richard; his dog Briar; Sydney’s mother and former wife, Maggie Cumbaa Strickland; his girlfriend Tracie Austin and granddaughter Bristol; his sisters Debbie Shelton and Tammy Fowler; numerous nieces and nephews; and several friends who were like family.
We would like to thank the staff at Graceville Rehabilitation for the excellent care Jamie received while he was there, and Emerald Coast Hospice for keeping him comfortable in his last days. He is healed and is whole again!
Memorialization will be by cremation. Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 5-7 PM CST at Adams Funeral Home. Adams Funeral Home is entrusted with his last step on earth.
