Lonnie Gene Nissley

February 25, 1937 — May 10, 2026

Blountstown, FL

Lonnie Gene Nissley, 89 of Blountstown, Florida, peacefully passed into his heavenly home on May 10, 2026 in Atmore, Alabama. He was an ordinary man with a big heart and a gentle spirit who spent his life joyfully serving others. He was content with the simple things in life and adored by those who knew him best.

He was born on February 25, 1937 in Garnett, KS to Chris and Sarah Nissley. He grew up in Iowa and moved with his family to Florida as a teenager. He shared almost 68 years with his dear wife Alma (Yoder) Nissley. He grew up on a dairy farm and had a variety of other jobs including working as a farmer and mechanic for Anders Equipment Company for 15 years, driving log truck for Ray Bange Logging, and working for Neal Land and Timber. He also delivered fuel for Bennet Eubanks Oil Company until he finally retired at 83 years old.

He was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church and a founding member of Red Oak Community Church. He loved the Lord and faithfully served behind the scenes in many roles. He was known as Uncle Lonnie and was a grandfather figure to many of the children in the church family who delighted in his kind attention. Always reaching out to others, he made everyone feel loved. He is survived by his wife, Alma Nissley, six children: Martha Joy & Dave Troyer, Miriam & Mike Webster, James & Linda Nissley, Mary & Ellis Beachy, Jonathan & Andrea Nissley, and Myra & Carl Miller; 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren as well as his sisters, Mary Bell, Heidi Smucker, Marie Detweiler, Carolyn Ebersole, Pauline Miller and Treva Schrock and brother Chris Nissley. He was preceded in death by his parents Chris and Sarah Nissley, his brothers Nelson, Leroy, Ira, Ivan, and John Nissley and sister Ann Hochstedler.

Lonnie was a gracious and happy man known as “whistling Pete” because he always whistled as he worked. He enjoyed riding his bicycle to work and on the bike trail. He kept a mixture of bird seeds on his giant birdfeeder to attract a large variety of birds he watched throughout the year. He was the “neighborhood handyman,” always generous with his time. He loved his family and especially his grandkids. He enjoyed traveling and camping with his family, and was most content when surrounded by his loved ones.

A visitation to honor Lonnie’s memory will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home, in Blountstown. The funeral service will take place the following day, at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2026 at Red Oak Community Church, near Altha with David Yoder officiating. Interment will follow in Red Oak Cemetery.
