Roy Jay Porep, a cherished member of his family and community, passed away on July 16, 2025, in Blountstown, Florida, at the age of 65. Born on January 21, 1960, in Chicago, Illinois, Roy's journey through life was marked by kindness, and a passion for sports and community engagement.
Roy worked at the Piggly Wiggly in Port St. Joe, where he built friendships with both colleagues and customers. He found his true calling as a tennis instructor and coaching a women’s tennis team at a recreation facility in south Florida where he lived most of his life. His love for sports extended beyond tennis; he was an avid pickleball player, proudly participating in the Sugar Sands Pickleball Club in Mexico Beach, Florida. One of his proudest achievements was winning a gold medal at a pickleball tournament alongside his brother, Art.
Roy attended Broward Community College. Throughout his life, he was known for being the most easygoing, quiet, kind, and loving son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, employee, and friend that anyone would want to know. His warm demeanor and gentle spirit made him a beloved figure to all who had the pleasure of crossing his path.
Among the fond memories shared among family and friends are the joyful moments spent tailgating at Miami Marlins and Miami Dolphins games.
Roy is survived by his brother, Art Porep and his wife Susan; his nephew, Tom Porep and wife Julie, and their children, great Nephews, Luke and Nolan; his niece, Mindy Rankin and her husband Eric; and many extended family members, as well as dear friends from his pickleball community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Barbara Van Es Porep.
Roy leaves us with a lasting legacy, reminding us that his disability was dementia and he was a human being.
The family expresses their gratitude to Emerald Coast Hospice Care and River Valley Health and Rehabilitation.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Mexico Beach, Florida, allowing friends and family to come together to honor and remember the gentle spirit of Roy. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
